# 5 Common Questions About C-Sections

In the United States, approximately 1 in 3 births are the result of a [C-Section deliver](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caesarean_section)y. Cesarean Sections are often performed when the health of the mother or baby is at risk. Some common reasons for this increased risk can be age or health. This makes them more complicated than a natural birth, but these days many more women are having c-sections: often because women are choosing to have their first baby later in life. C-Sections in the United States have increased substantially since 2000.

## Common Questions About C-Sections

### How long does the procedure take?

The procedure is very quick. The delivery itself usually lasts around 10 minutes, and then, another 30 minutes are required to treat the mother.

### Can dad stay in the room for a C-Section?

Yes, in fact most hospitals attempt to make the procedure as much like the normal delivery process as usual.

### Can I Request to Have a C-Section?

You can, however, this decision needs to be made with your physician, and more importantly, you should carefully think through the implications of longer recovery time, risk of complications, and weigh your options before choosing a C-Section.

### Is it possible to bank cord blood, cord tissue, or placental tissue if your baby is born via Cesarean Section?

Yes, and Americord has an FDA-approved bag, which is sterilized on the inside and outside, making it safe for C-Sections.

### How much longer will I be required to stay at the hospital?

Most hospitals suggest you can expect to spend 3 to 4 days recovering in the hospital, with additional recovery at home, but it is best to consult with your primary caregiver to know what to expect for your recovery.

As C-Sections become increasingly popular, it is important to know that the delivery room must be completely sterilized. With that being said, many women are opting to do umbilical cord blood banking because of the potentially enormous medical benefits for baby and family; however, not all private cord blood banking companies have an FDA-approved C-Section bag. Americord is one of the companies that does and their approved C-Section bag is sterilized on both the inside and outside to ensure safety for both mom and baby. Schedule your cord blood consultation with one of Americord’s Cord Blood Specialists to find out if umbilical cord blood banking is right for you and your family.
