The study will also demonstrate whether or not umbilical cord blood can be used to treat the rare heart defect. Mayo Clinic is a world-class non-profit medical care and research facility that boasts an impressive staff of doctors and sciences of more than 3800, which spends nearly $500 million a year on research. 1000 babies are born every year with HLHS, which causes half of the heart to contain valves that are either too small to allow sufficient blood flow or closed entirely.
