What is the Average Stem Cell Count for Cord Blood Banking?
What is your cord blood bank’s minimum quality threshold in terms of milliliters and cell count for storing cord blood?
What is an average umbilical cord blood sample size?
Americord on average get twice as many stem cells from umbilical cord blood, as compared to other private cord blood banking companies. The industry average is 60mL and about 470 million TNC stem cells. In 2011, our cord blood sample size for our entire inventory was 92.5 ml. We have only increased our cord blood sample size and the stem cells processed from this blood. These numbers are only averages. It is possible to could get less than the average. If the collection volume or cell count is below a certain threshold, best practices indicate that the cord blood company contact the to see if they still want to store the sample, since using today’s technology, it is unlikely that the client would be able to use this. This is because for many diseases there has to be a minimum amount of stem cells available to give a treatment the best shot at working.
If my sample does not meet the requirements, can I still save it?
Yes, some clients opt to save the sample regardless, since it is possible that better technology in the future might enable the use of these cells or possibly the expansion of the cells. Several of our competitors store the collections regardless of these measurements without consideration of these factors, which really isn’t in the best interest of the client. If the yield is below par and the client decides not to store the sample, we do not charge. For us, we use the following criteria for notifying the client: below 100 million cells.
