New Cord Blood Research: Treatment for Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome

Posted by Martin Smithmyer

Mayo Clinic is conducting a new study to test whether it is safe to use umbilical cord blood to treat children with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS).The study will also demonstrate whether or not umbilical cord blood can be used to treat the rare heart defect.

Mayo Clinic is a world class non-profit medical care and research facility that boasts an impressive staff of doctors and sciences of more than 3800, which spends nearly $500 million a year on research. 1000 babies are born every year with HLHS, which causes half of the heart to contain valves that are either too small to allow sufficient blood flow or closed entirely.

The study could open the door to research into using cord blood for treatment of many other heart conditions that can be present at birth.
