Americord’s In-House Lab Safety and Security

Americord is a leading provider of biobanking and health screening services, dedicated to helping families live longer, healthier lives. Our pristine in-house lab is located in the heart of New York City.

At the Americord lab, expectant parents can feel confident in the safety and security of their baby’s stem cells. The lab is equipped with the latest technologies and is staffed by highly trained professionals. Our team members follow strict protocols and adhere to the highest standards of quality control.

We understand that the magnitude of this investment may make some families question the safety and security of the stem cells themselves, so we have outlined some of the measures we take to keep your baby’s stem cells safe and secure for decades.

Safety and Security

Let’s start with the building itself. Between the front door and the in-house lab, there are three secure access points with key-coded doors that keep your banked stem cells safe. Using a granted pass, only authorized personnel have access through these doors and the building elevator.

Within the lab itself, stem cells are preserved in cryo-preservation nitrogen tanks. These tanks are monitored by our lab team and have attached alarms that signal 24/7 if there is an issue needing immediate attention. Rest assured, our trained staff keeps great care of your family’s stem cells and values the trust you place in us to ensure viability and readiness if needed.

During our processing phase, our team codes each individual unit to properly store and identify the clients stem cells in the future. These codes are kept securely for the Americord team to reference, however very few employees know the exact match ups. Because of this, there is little to no possibility to match certain cases with designated clients, unless our authorized team were the ones pulling them from storage themselves. The purpose of de-identifying the stem cells is to keep the privacy of our clients as a main priority, while also staying mindful that no one should be able to identify whose stem cells are in each rack, except for our team.

When it comes to natural disasters or other hazards, Americord has implemented a multi-level protection plan to ensure the safety of the stem cells. The tanks themselves are securely sealed, meaning many outside influences would not alter the contents inside. However, should immediate transfer of the tanks be required, our partner in emergency cryostorage and safety, GenVault, will remove and store our cryopreservation tanks immediately.

Lastly, let’s talk about regulating the temperature of the nitrogen tanks. We have temperature sensors for each of the tanks and for the ultra-low freezer. The probes report the temperature back to an interface within the lab to alert the team of the current conditions. In addition to this, all temperatures are recorded and monitored remotely by an online company called Tutela who report findings to our team and send alerts directly to key employees to let them know if there is a problem that needs to be checked. These alerts are sent to caution that temperatures are falling outside of the usual range, which is something our team would take very seriously and address immediately.
